The way you pack for a trip goes a long ways towards determining just how enjoyable and effective your journey is. However, not every person nor every trip is well served by the same packing list.
Minimalist Packing
There is much to like about ultra-light or minimalist packing since you can get by with a single carry-on lightweight bag by going this route. However, there is much to be wary of if you are used to bring a long list of so-called essentials with you when travelling.
The three keys to successful minimalist packing is to bring only actual essential items, bring items that serve more than one purpose, and enjoy the challenge of getting by with less. What this means in a real sense is that your clothing will need to be interchangeable so that it can be comfortable during a long day on your feet and also presentable enough to get you into a nice restaurant. Next, it means that you will need to replace bulky items, such as towels with a single lightweight travel towel, and limit your reading material to perhaps a one book that you replace as you move on. If you are going to go ultra-minimalist, you will need to be prepared to hand wash your undergarments in sinks and bathtubs each evening. Oh, if at all possible, limit your footwear choices to a single pair of shoes. Footwear takes up loads of space in a leather suitcase.
Business Trip
Although you can pack small for business trips too, the truth is that your packing flexibility will be limited.
First off, a business trip will probably have a set itinerary. If yours does, make sure you have that info in your carry-on leather bag along with any tickets and reservations you will need. Next, since your time will most likely be tight, you will need to arrive at your destination with what you need. Though your hotel ought to have some of the toiletries you will need, make sure you bring along any specialized items and medications.
Depending upon how long your business trip will be, you should pack into your leather duffel bag or other leather travel bag enough pairs of underwear and business socks for five days of wear so that you have time to wait for your dirty ones to be laundered. Also, in addition to your dress shoes, it is usually a good idea to bring one pair of walking or sports shoes and a pair of athletic socks.
As you should always do when packing for any trip, only pack business clothing that can be mixed and matched. Pack at least one fewer pair of pants and shirts than you think you need.
Consider your Destination
When determining what else to bring on your trip, you will need to consider your destination and its weather. Of course, a July trip to Cancun will not require the jacket that a trip in the same month to Chile would. Also, if you plan on spending time on the beach or mountains, make sure your arrive prepared.
